In the three local government areas of the state that produce oil and gas, the Edo State Government has started an extensive training program for women and youth.
“2022 Aguakpa Ghe Igbama” is the name of the training course that the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOGPADEC) organized.
The women and youths received training in a variety of occupational skills, such as panel beating, plumbing, welding and fabrication, agriculture, fishing, poultry, and piggery, as well as shoe and bag manufacturing.
The governor of Edo State, who was represented by Pastor Kennedy Osifo, Chairman of EDSOGPADEC, in his keynote speech, reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of women and youth in the state and said that the training is a step toward realizing the governor’s vision of improving the lives of those who live in the state’s oil and gas producing regions.
Since the commission’s founding fifteen years ago in 2007, he continued, it has primarily concentrated on infrastructural development, including the building of roads, health centers, schools, courts, markets, and town halls. According to him, this approach has not fully addressed the discontent among the youth in these communities.
“Mr. Governor had the authority to also intervene in core areas of infrastructural and human capital development in the three oil and gas producing local government areas of the state,” Osifo continued.
According to him, it is now crucial to get more young people involved in self-development so that they can take advantage of the chances that the state government’s plans for the Industrial Park and Gelegele Seaport will present in the short, medium, and long terms.
The chair of the commission clarified that the goal of EDSOGPADEC is to empower women and youth in order to support them in creating community-based businesses that will enhance their quality of life and lower the level of unrest in these areas.
